Grammy picked the picture out of an old Home and Garden or Southern Living magazine, she’d probably bought at a garage sale and we painted it together.

Grammy told stories about growing up in the dust bowl, share cropping and living next to the reservation and communities around Eufala, and Grandy told stories of going hunting quail and Buck Avance shooting multiple (like 5-10?) quail because they’d line up along the rows. Quail were in plenty back then, can’t hardly find em these days.

Grams would heat up some random leftover she’d frozen and we’d laugh and laugh about life, love and hope of an amazing family like they had.

That fall I held Payton for the first time and my world was changed. Girl dad.
